Finding a problem means you’ll have to work on the solution. Some people steer clear of looking for errors because it entails taking responsibility and doing extra work. But they're missing out on an important opportunity.
Companies that put their heads in the sand will fall off the radar and lose out to companies that actively look for process issues and address them. Honest reflection combined with decisive action is the only way we can improve – both at work and in our personal lives.
So don’t be afraid to sound the alarm.
There’s no shame in admitting production quality hasn’t been perfect. In fact, those brave enough to point out flaws and indicate a better path forward are rewarded in the long run.
It’s going to be a tough pill to swallow. But once you get the word out – once the inconsistencies become common knowledge – you’ll see the momentum building and decision-makers will be motivated to address the problem.
I’ve seen this happen first-hand. Time after time, when I visit a facility that recently installed one of our non-contact gauges, I’m struck by the innovative ways engineers are using their new thickness data to implement process improvements. I’ve never had doubts about the utility of data, but when engineers get their hands on good data they take things to a whole new level … It fuels a fire of innovation and creativity. And it’s exciting to watch.
As far as I can see, there’s always been a premium on people who tell the truth and take ownership of problems.
