About Mate Gauge : Beyond Measure
We build the "eyes" of the modern factory. Our laser-based thickness monitoring systems allow global leaders like Stelco (Steel), Weyerhaeuser (Veneer/Wood), and major Lithium-Ion Battery manufacturers to achieve micron-level precision. We are a high-performance team replacing outdated, manual measurement with cutting-edge technology to reduce industrial waste worldwide.
The Opportunity: Mentorship & "In the Trenches" R&D
We don't believe in corporate silos. You will work in a flat, highly collaborative environment alongside our engineers.
- Real-World Impact: You will be attacking technical hurdles that directly affect our customers' production lines.
- Master the Stack (LabVIEW): LabVIEW is a cornerstone of our development. It is the visual, data-flow language that allows us to bridge the gap between complex physics and hardware. While prior experience is great, we value "Systems Thinking" above all, if you understand data flow and logic, we'll help you master LabVIEW to build production-ready systems.
- Modern Development: We leverage AI-assisted engineering (tools like Cursor and LLMs) to move fast, automate testing, and solve problems that used to take weeks in just hours.
- P.Eng Path: This role is designed to satisfy the competency requirements for your future Professional Engineering designation.
Your Mission: Attack, Solve, Improve
- Customer Problem Solving: Dive into real-world data from sites like steel mills or battery plants to solve "noise" and accuracy issues.
- R&D & Product Development: Contribute to the design and validation of new hardware and software modules that will become part of our core product line.
- Process Innovation: We want you to look at how we build and test things and ask, "How can we make this 10x faster?" Use AI tools to automate repetitive testing or data analysis.
- Hands-On Integration: Move between the keyboard and the lab bench, wiring sensors, running "smoke tests" on new frames, and debugging hardware interfaces.
Month 1: Foundation & High-Speed Integration
- Physics & Hardware: Master the fundamentals of laser triangulation and sensor qualification. You'll be in the lab from week one, getting your hands on the gear.
- LabVIEW Immersion: Get up to speed on the Mate Gauge software stack. You will begin writing your first functional modules using LabVIEW combined with AI coding assistants to accelerate your learning.
- Shadowing: Work alongside the team and the CEO to observe how we diagnose "impossible" customer measurement problems.
Month 2: Attacking Customer Challenges
- Active Problem Solving: You will be assigned a specific customer technical hurdle (e.g., a measurement error on a Stelco galvanizing line). You'll analyze the data, identify the root cause, and propose a fix.
- R&D Validation: Help "battle-test" a new product feature or sensor type. You won't just run tests; you'll design the test plan to ensure it survives a 24/7 factory environment.
- Direct Collaboration: Participate in design reviews with the full team, bringing your own ideas for product and process improvement to the table.
Month 3: Product & Process Ownership
- Leading Development: Take the lead on a new internal tool or customer-facing LabVIEW module. This is your chance to leave a permanent mark on our product.
- Process Optimization: Identify a bottleneck in our assembly or testing process and deploy an AI-driven or automated solution to fix it.
- Ship to Production: See your contributions integrated into a system that is boxed up and shipped to a major global customer like Weyerhaeuser.
